Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a great solution for both the home and business. Now that most households have multiple computers at home it makes even more sense.
NAS gives a centralized location for all of your important data. Whether you are backing up your family’s MP3 collection and pictures or important family records and scanned forms. Some network attached storage systems even comes with a server program that runs to make the backups that much more easy. Other types of devices are nothing more than an enclosure that holds one or more hard drives that connect to your router. I would highly recommend figuring out what you want to use it for and do some research to find the right setup for your needs.
One thing that would be important to note is there is always a chance that a hard drive can fail. That is why typically I would recommend a NAS that offers a “hot spare” or “hot swap” setup so there is always a drive that can take over should the primary drive fail. It really doesn’t matter if you are working in IT or at home, data loss is not fun and when a hard drive fails, it can cost hundreds of dollars to send it off for data recovery from some special service.
